Creating your curriculum vitae, or CV, can be a long and burdensome process as many do not know how what to include. The purpose of the CV is to create an advert for you to send to prospective employers. In order to do so, you have to make yourself look attractive to the employer only using words, but this is easier said than done. Follow these 8 tips to help create the best personal advert for the job of your dreams. 1. Know your objective. Your CV should be built around this objective so have it clear before writing. 2. Modify the CV to each employer. Do not send a blanket CV to everyone. They are all looking for different qualities. 3. Choose your words carefully. The ultimate goal is to obtain an interview. Read your CV as the future employer would read it and make it interesting but refrain from jargon or slang. Be concise. Use the classifieds for available jobs to your advantage and utilize key words located in the advert on your resume. This ensures that you say what they are looking for. 4. Put the most important information up front. Most employers will scan the CV. There is a higher chance that he or she will read more in the beginning. Keep the irrelevant information out and insert your achievements. 5. Highlight your strong characteristics. A CV should contain your achievements to show what you have accomplished in past jobs. Use action verbs to describe these achievements. 6. Don’t lie. You should be able to prove everything you put on your CV from school to job experience and any details you give. 7. Be explicit. Use precise numbers and percentages instead of “some”, “a few”, “many”, etc. 8. Proofread and get someone else to proofread. Be sure that when read, the focus is clear and the objective well stated. Remember that this is a personal advert for a specific job. Remember that with a CV, you should present yourself positively in a way that would land you the job. Stay professional. |
